That’s cool but what to do and not to do once you have it done…

I have tried to list few things below so please read and comment at the end of this article…

What to Do:

  • Leave the tattoo bandaged for a minimum of 3 hours and no longer than 12 hours.
  • Remove bandage under warm running water. If bandage is stuck to the tattoo, gently remove it while under running water, therefore reducing the risk of damaging the tattoo.
  • Once bandage is removed, using an unscented soap, wash the tattoo off well with your hand and warm soapy water.
  • When done washing the tattoo off, gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel and allow the tattoo to air dry for about 5-10 minutes.
  • Apply Curel (Ultra healing/Fragrance free) dry skin lotion to the tattoo 4-6 times a day.
  • The hand lotion can be applied to the tattoo about 3-4 times daily for about 10-14 days or until the tattoo is completely done peeling.
  • Somewhere between 3 and 6 days, the tattoo will start to flake off like tissue paper. Do not pick at or scratch. Let the skin peel naturally. You will notice small pieces of dry skin containing color coming off while using the lotion or washing the tattoo. This is normal- it is just a top layer of dead skin coming off. Your tattoo is not disappearing.

What NOT to Do:

  • Once bandage is completely removed DO NOT rebandage the tattoo.
  • NO direct sunlight on tattoo for first 2-3 weeks.
  • DO NOT pick or scratch tattoo while it is peeling.
  • DO NOT soak the tattoo for 2 weeks. No swimming, baths, hot tubs or saunas for 2 weeks. When tattoo has completely peeled, swimming or soaking is OK.
  • No shaving or waxing area until tattoo is completely healed.
  • DO NOT apply alcohol, Vaseline petroleum jelly or sunblock to fresh tattoo.
  • DO NOT listen to friends or so-called tattoo experts. If you have questions, call or visit the artist that did your tattoo!

Some extra stuff:

  • Once you leave the shop, proper care of your tattoo is your responsibility.
  • Small amounts of color may appear on clothing or sheets for first few days.
  • When tattoo is peeling, color will appear in pieces of dry skin.
  • If the tattoo is in an area where it can be exposed to the air, allow it to breathe. Allowing the tattoo to breathe will help the healing. Your body and oxygen are going to heal the tattoo.
  • If possible, wear loose fitting clothing over tattoo and be careful not to suffocate tattoo with socks or pantyhose.

And please DO NOT ignoring your tattooist listen what he/she has to say they are there to help.

  1. I want to get a Tattoo done on my neck. few questions
    1. Is it ok to have a tattoo on a neck.
    2. After the Tattoo can i go to GYM & do my regular excercise. If not, for how many days do i have to stop my workout.
    3. For how many days do the Tattoo should be protected from water.
    4. I have to wear my officical uniform with from monday to friday which carries tie as well. does it make any impact on Tattoo.
    5. Any suggestion from your side to get the tattoo on neck.

    Thanks

  2. Hi Harmaninder,

Do you have any other tattoos? Usually neck tats come after full sleeves, back pieces and such. Its the most visible area and it takes different kinda commitment to have something that visible…

  3. why on the neck? if you don’t have any other tattoos I wouldn’t reccommend it as your first one! it’s very visable and I would think about it first as it’s a huge commitment! I just had my second tattoo done at the top of my back going accross part of my neck which the pain was ok but if i had that done first it would’ve put me off having any others – i had my arm done first.

  4. Pretty good post. I just stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really enjoyed reading your blog posts. Any way I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you post again soon.

  5. HI. great post i have about 12 tattoos all over and what you have said i have done for all of them except for the sun that is something idid not know cheers thanks heaps

  6. I am plannin to get my first tatto on my foot in April. I have to wear shoes to work obviously and tattoos must be covered…can’t wear sandals or flip flops….any suggestions? This will be my first and probably only tattoo, I wanna do it right!

  7. i would say wait on your foot tattoo till you have time to let it heal properly i have a tattoo on my foot and know sveral others as well it is a very sensative spot and wearing shoes and especialls sock does not help the socks like to stick to the area if you read what the say above about the bandage sticking same concept with socks hope all goes well fawnix

  8. got a question…I got this stuff called “AFTER INKED” I don’t know if it’s this stuff or just me, but my tattoo is healing super fast…it’s my first, and it’s a good size(across back) but compaired to my friends, mine is healing 4X faster than theirs…didn’t know if you knew anything about this stuff, but for me, It’s working great

  9. Hey i’ve recently got a new tat, i already have others, but i’ve been putting vaseline on it.. i just read this and it says not to put vaseline on it? Does that mean i’ve damaged it or what affect will it have now? Thanks!

  10. i am getting a tribal flower across my whole right side what do you suggest with bras and stuff like that?

  11. hi this helped me so much as i only after recently got a tattoo and now i knw how to look after it.

  12. ive already got 15 small an large tattos on all parts of my body but today im off for 2 very special ones on both my hands..im havin the breast cancer ribbon and the cervical cancer ribbon..these are for my mum who is currently battlin breast cacner an for myself as ive recently beat cervical cancer..so gettin them on my hands so i can see them every day as a reminder to just how lucky ive been to defeat the dreaded desease xx

  13. Harmaninder …..i have done plenty of neck work on ppl and apparently it hurts like a mf!! also…have u ever noticed how little kids stare at handicapped or ppl in wheelchairs?? well if u dont mind that id just jump right in and get your neck done!!!unfortunantly it can make u unemployable, even in this day and age,the difference between someone with a tattoo and someone without? the people with tattoos couldnt give a shit if u have them or not! caution, think real hard dude.

  14. Hey Mike and guys again have a design that i would like to get,but being am located in the good ol aussie outback artists are limited however have found one that is promising only prob she is a bit hesitant working red ink when it comes to shading was just wondering if i emailed you guys the design could or would you be able to make some suggestions that might help as have spent the better part of my life to find a design that not only appeals to me but reflects part of me and dont really want to alter it but my location restricts me a bit in terms of travelling to another artist as my wife is not very well any help would be very appreciated thanx again.P.S your site is inspiring.Regards Pete

  15. i think that your site is realy intersting and helpfull , it also gives me great ideas 4 new tatts ,, thankx again daz

  16. hey, mike
thanks for the inputs. keep it coming! I wanna have my first one done right so i would get a second one..haha. your emails are appreciated. Thanks again.

  17. hey,
i plan on getting a tattoo in a few days and I have some questions.

I had planned on getting my tattoo on the side of my calf but then I read that tattoos that are visible can lead to workplace discrimination. And also would it be smart to get my first tattoo on my foot????

  18. Is hydrogen peroxide bad for tats? Mine is on my inner left ankle n it is still really red n it was done almost a week ago n it still hurts I think it may be infected.. :(

  19. Most Likely your tattoo is not infected because, u hav 2 rememba a tattoo hurt regardless & probably won’t stop hurting 4 a while like, atleast a week or 2 so just give it about 2 weeks & I think you’ll b good

  20. hi guys i have 15 tattoos and i have always came home and jumped into the shower, and turned it on as hot as i can stand it, it hurts i know. but it is the best remedy, as soon as you get out lather it with bepanthem cream (babies nappy rash cream) bingo two weeks all clear.
    cheers malcolm

  21. vaseline cloggs your poors up and your tattoo can not breathe… artists use it while tattooing so they have a nice surface for the hand to slide on.

  22. hey peter in the outback. this is something beautiful, hopefully, you will have for life. i dont think id risk it to someone promising but hesitant. save yourself grief save up for a roadtrip, flight, whatever, and head to airlie beach queensland. huge tatt shop owned by arron right on the foreshore. i know people that come to airlie just to have a tatt done. bonus holiday in a tropical paradise :) had both mine done there ( i live 2500kms south in adelaide)worth the journey alone! mine healed without ANY scarring, peeling or flaking following the good advice above, and the use of bepanthen cream that they advise. available over counter in any aussie chemist. active ingredient is benzalkonium chloride, antiseptic cream. this is the best advice i can offer. thankx to arron and ‘the mad monk’for an amazing piece of art work that healed in days not weeks. these guys are the best :)

  23. Hey Mike, Just had another Tatt done On Saturday and every thing you just mentioned, my Artist all ready had me filled in. I’m good to go but It’s good that you post these hints for people who don’t know what to do for after care. Good job!

  24. I have 8 tattoos and all of them I can cover from the cross on my right calf to my whole side piece. I layed on my side for 2 hours for that. 1 1/2 for my cross on my calf. Work isn’t that bad due to the fact of wearing jeans. Some jobs are different then others. Id ask a boss or manager about tattoos being visible at work. My boss doesn’t care. He said its a way of showing who you are.

  25. All of the Do’s and Don’t tips here are spot on, stick to them and you will have a great looking tattoo….The only thing i do different is use Bepanthen as my aftercare lotion…Bepanthen is a nappy rash ointment which is antibacterial and breathable. This is widely used in the UK for tattoo aftercare. I have 5 tattoo’s, 2 small and 3 large and have ended up with great results on all of them….Once healed, look after your tattoo, especially dont let them get ruined by too much sun!

  26. Thanks for the reminders. I always used Aquaphor healing ointment. My latest tatt took only about 2 1/2 weeks to heal and it is half sleeve in size. I was sore for about 2 days and the healing began. Definitely wash and rinse with an anti-bacterial soap (gently rub with your hand/fingers. No bath poofs or wash cloths), pat dry, and let the tatt breathe for awhile before you apply the ointment. Do these things 4 – 5 times a day.

  27. Hi-
I’ve followed all my artists instructions on after care but without fail I always need a touchup on color or shading work.
I tend to scab up after about a day and the scab is thick enough to take color when it comes off.
I’m not sure if this is normal? Another chap I spoke to said the color was being applied too heavy but I’m no expert so am unsure.
I don’t drink or take any blood thinning drugs before getting done but still end up bleeding (plasmaring!) like a stuck pig!
These guys use the ‘cling wrap’ method of care and I usually take it off to have blood running down my arm even after the amount of time I’m told to leave it on!

  28. I hav a tattoo on my right foot since last Monday….
I have been told by my tatoist to keep clingfilm over my tattoo, now i’ve read on this page not to sufocate….and wearing socks…. but for work I need to wear good shoes…..what do I do now?
